Showing Custom Events in a check squashes the Y axis

This one seems minor, but hopefully you can review it when you next revisit the UX.

We made a change today that sped up page delivery by between x3 and x6, Big change right? I added a custom event for the deployment and went to look at the graphs so I have something nice to share with stakeholders to visualise this improvement, and do that using the WPM tool!

Anyway the graphs look pretty horrible. If you mail me I can show you, but they really do not convey the improvement.at all.

The main issue that I can see is that CUSTOM EVENTS create a separate chart below the existing one. This makes the Y axis of both charts really tiny (it halves the size of it) which makes any fluctuations on that axis much harder to spot.

My idea would simply to be that Custom Events could be shown with a vertical line. Put that line in a transparent colour so you can see the speed metrics through it, and this would look quite cool and allow the Y axis to be preserved.

Here is a nice Etsy post of their internal systems where the deploys are shown in this way - https://codeascraft.com/2010/12/08/track-every-release/

Of course I can get a nice tall Y axis using Analyse Metrics/Trends - but I cannot use the Custom Events in this view! (WPMWEB-I-242)

Alternatively you could also put a control below the graph that lets me drag it down and make the Y axis usable again.

    Admin Response

Thanks for your submission. We are aware of this issue and will hopefully be able to get a fix in order soon. Our proposed fix at the moment is to add the Custom Event as a separate chart in a way that will allow the Y-axis to be preserved for both charts.

If Custom Event is an entirely different chart won't that make it difficult to correlate an event with a change of performance? Also that would make it tricky to provide screenshots for example for stakeholders. From my side at least I think if it could be overlaid onto the same graph, just in a way that doesn't change the axis' that would be best.

I see that my initial response was not clear. I mean that they should be full size as separate charts would have been. But they will still be "attached" so that the vertical indicator that follows the time line when you mouse over check runs in the chart will span both charts. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for the clarification Lars. Looking forward to seeing it.
